The Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit

The Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit, also known as Pauline Fathers and Brothers, are spiritual sons of Saint Paul of Thebes, who is considered to be the first known hermit in the Christian tradition. Blessed Eusebius of Esztergom established our community in the first half of the 13 th century when he brought together hermits scattered throughout the woods of Hungary.

Today the Pauline Order is a semi-contemplative religious community, which means that every monk cherishes the contemplation of God in prayer, in solitude, and in a community and connects it with pastoral work. The Pauline Fathers are especially known for working at numerous Marian shrines throughout the world and fostering a devotion to the Mother of God, especially in the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa.

We hope that this website will help you to get to know us and our way of life better. Perhaps the Lord is calling you to become a Pauline monk and go out into the spiritual desert, just as he has called many before you.

WHO WE ARE

What is our Order? Where did it come from? How have the Pauline Fathers and
Brothers developed over the centuries in serving God and the Church? Each
religious community is rooted in God and grows in the specific conditions of time
and place, creating its own charism and spirituality and shaping its identity.
Inspired by St. Paul the First Hermit, Pauline Fathers and Brothers lead lives

guided by prayerful contemplation. These times of solitude spent with God
strengthen them for their active pastoral service in parishes and shrines.

HOW WE LIVE

Religious life is a continuous following of Jesus Christ, which is expressed both spiritually and physically. By contemplating God in prayer, participating in the sacraments of the Church, meditating on the Word of God, mortifying the body with its senses and desires through vows of chastity, poverty and obedience, the Pauline resembles Christ, to whom he devotes his life. He does this also by humbly fulfilling the duties assigned by his superiors, which enrich the whole community and the people to whom we are sent.

WHERE WE LIVE

Over time, our Order began to grow among new people of different places and cultures. Today we are an international community reaching four continents, spreading the Good News about Jesus regardless of place, language, customs, or challenges. Every human being needs God, regardless of skin color or origin, so we try to answer God’s call in different parts of the world; where we already serve, we bring the spirit of peace, joy, and hope, not forgetting our contemplative roots.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The process of discernment, which must be given time and strength, is part of the path of vocation. To assist young persons in the discernment of a vocation, a given Order takes initiatives to assist them in this process of discovery.

Our Order offers a calendar of various meetings and vocational retreats in the form of a calendar, which you can view below.

VOCATION

Is there anything in our Order that has caught your attention, making you think
more deeply about the Pauline way of life? Maybe our white habit or our monastic
way of life suits you? Perhaps you would like to develop your devotion to the
Mother of God. A vocation is the voice of God that calls for a concrete dedication
to Him in the service of love. This cry must be answered actively and concretely
through proper discernment. Contacting a vocation clerk, participating in a
vocation retreat, or spending a few days in a monastery can help. See what needs to
be done in order to truly experience the community spirit.
